GUWAHATI WILDLIFE TOUR

THIS SUMMER, COME FACE TO FACE WITH AN INDIAN ONE-HORNED RHINO OR GAZE INTO THE EYES OF A TIGER, IF YOU ARE LUCKY

An unfathomable river courses wildly along the city, as verdant hills look down from its banks. A remote town, well connected, yet largely unexplored, is Guwahati for you. In addition to a plethora of attractions on offer—undulating tea estates, cruises on the Brahmaputra, occult practices in age-old temples, tribal encounters— what attracts tourists the most is the lord of Kaziranga—the one-horned rhino. It's time to seek out the lord...

ASSAM STATE ZOO AND BOTANICAL GARDENS :
The Assam State Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are located about 5 km east of the railway station. The zoo, spread over 130 hectares of land, has a very good collection of wild animals in their natural habitats. Swamp tapirs, white tigers, leopards and Assam's famous one-horned rhinos are among them. It also houses rare species of birdlife. The botanical garden within the zoo was established in 1982. Spreading over an area of 82 hectares, the garden houses various types of palms, shrubs, herbs, conifers and broad-leaved plants. It also contains an orchid house, with 44 varieties of rare orchids of the North-East region.

DEEPORBEEL BIRD SANCTUARY:
Deeporbeel Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of around 4 sq km, is about 18 km from the city. An extensive wetland, the sanctuary is home to more than 150 species of birds, such as ferruginous ducks, adjutant storks, fishing eagles, water cocks, grey-headed lapwings and kingfishers.

PABITORA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY :
The sanctuary is situated in Morigaon district, on the border of Nagaon and Kamrup districts, 65 km from Guwahati. Covering an area of 38.8 sq km, the sanctuary is home to one-horned rhinos, leopards, tigers and varieties of migratory and non-migratory birds. Asiatic buffaloes, bears and civets are also found here. Accommodation is available in forest bungalows and the best season to visit is from November to March. Driving here from Guwahati is the best option—it is close by and the roads are good.
